Three Types of EV Charging Available for Your Journeys
Our EV charging connector guide looks over three charging levels available to everyone in North America. You’ll see a different kind of EV charging connector for plugging your EV in as you recharge it every day.
- Level 1 Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): This charging connector is a standard, grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet commonly found in your home and garage. However, it’s the slowest type of charging method. You could charge an EV in 24 to 48 hours with this method.
- Level 2 Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 Charging needs a professionally installed charging device in your garage or carport in Cherry Hill. You’ll charge your EV in 8 to 12 hours, depending on the vehicle you choose. You must hire a licensed electrician for a home charger, but it’s still more cost-effective than filling up a tank with gasoline. You’ll recoup your investment quickly when installing a home charger.
- Level 3 Public Charging: Also known as DC Fast Charging, these charging stations deliver 80% of a full charge in around 30 minutes. But some brands have their own charging stations.
Home EV Charging Connector
We highly recommend installing a specialized EV charging connector by hiring a professional electrician. This type of EV charging connector has five pins (instead of three prongs) to let higher amounts of electricity flow into your EV’s battery pack. These EV connectors are completely safe and effective, and give you the most efficient charging experience for your EV.
Combined Charging System (CCS) EV Charging Connector
DC Fast Public Charging stations have CCS electrical connectors. These types of EV charging connectors work for many EVs. You can find public CCS locations using your vehicle’s GPS or apps on your smartphone. These connectors have seven pins total instead of five to manage the higher amounts of electricity flowing into your EV or plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Choosing the Right Types of EV Charging Connectors for You
Every automaker determines the correct types of EV charging connectors needed for their vehicles, and not all of them are the same. Some brands have specialized DC Public Charging stations that can’t be used with other manufacturers. You might see some automakers offering free public charging for a year or two as an incentive to purchase a new EV. Other automakers might pay for your home charging box kit, but they won’t cover the electrician’s labor costs. But your investment does pay off with lower fuel costs.
You’ll need to determine what type of EV charging connector you plan to utilize the most for your drives. Will you need public charging stations for long trips away from home? Are you going to commute to and from your Mount Laurel home? Understand that DC Fast Charging will likely be more expensive than home charging, but it’s still cheaper than gasoline for your journeys wherever you drive.
